"How safe do you feel?"
In order to start making progressive, sustained recovery then the mind and the body must be in a healing state. Safety is at the core of this recovery. The chronic illness will have started after a one off traumatic event, a prolonged period of stress, an illness/virus, or even living your life in a particular way for many years. A fear response has been set in motion. The brain has perceived danger and the fight/flight response has been activated. This response stays on, as the brain does not consider the threat has gone and that you are still indeed unsafe.
Recovery will only happen when this fight/flight response is deactivated. We need to persuade the brain that we are safe and the alarm can be turned off. This is a real challenge. Thinking positively is not going to be enough. We have to consider the opposite of fear and we need to reverse why you became ill in the first place. Finding joy in the simplest of things, reducing exposure to stressors on the body, working on being mindful/present, giving our brain a break through for example meditation, reassuring messages of safety, finding time for true relaxation and self compassion are all really helpful in restoring a hypersensitive nervous system and a scared brain to normal.
Until next week.
Take care.
