"Let go or be dragged"

One of the biggest challenges on my recovery journey was a letting go of the past. Even though I understood that there was absolutely nothing that I could do to alter the past, I still found myself constantly ruminating on how I had lived my life and decisions that I had made. Simply put, I resisted and symptoms persisted!

Rumination comes in many forms. The following are examples of my own experiences, my research and what clients have shared with me.

  • I have let my family down. If I hadn't pushed so hard, then I wouldn't be in this situation.

  • I didn't listen to the messages being sent from my body and now it is too late.

  • I don't understand why I made that decision. It was always going to be a risk.

  • I wouldn't be here if I had achieved balance in my life. I was always on the go, constantly striving and pushing.

  • I was always helping others and people pleasing. I wish I had put myself first.

  • I wish that I had spent more time resting and giving my brain a break.

  • I was forever trying to control things and was constantly searching for the 'right' answer.

  • I went through so much trauma when I was young.

  • I have been so unlucky. I caught Covid three times.

  • I want to go back five years in time. I would live my life very differently.

  • I want my old life back!

  • I wish that I had heeded the advice give to me by others.

Whilst it is totally understandable that you might have grief, sadness, anger, and regret, about the past, in most situations, over thinking things will not help you move forward. Learn from your past mistakes - Yes!!!! Constantly going over and over things time and time again - No!!!

That said, there are situations where issues that are related to the past are preventing you from making progress e.g. repressed/supressed emotions related to past traumatic events. This may require specialist support from a therapist, coach or counsellor.

I am going to finish with a few quotes and phrases that I hope provide you with food for thought and inspire you in some way to make more progress.

"What you resist, persists"

"This is a new chapter in my life"

"I have not failed, I have learnt"

"I let go of what no longer serves me"

"I release the past and trust that everything is happening for my greater good"

"Accept the situation"

"No looking back"

And my favourite!

"For every problem under the sun, there be a solution, or there be none. If there be one try and find it, if there be none, never mind it" There is a way through this. There is a solution. Keep going and never give up searching for your answer!

In my next post I consider the following

"Is there a 'best way' of regulating your nervous system?"

Bye for now and take care,

Stuart
