Is diet and nutrition an important factor in recovery?
The Internet is full of debate about how particular diets, supplements and medications can support and help you recover from these illnesses.
I have done extensive research in this area, looking for patterns and trends that might provide some evidence and convincing argument on the merits of a particular approach. I have found no such evidence.
Common sense would tell you that eating sensibly and supplementing where deficiency is evident, would be helpful for any chronic illness. There is no "magic pill" and one will never be found for these disorders. With a hypersensitive, dysfunctional nervous system it is appropriate to keep things as balanced as possible and avoid anything that is going to provide a spike e.g. caffeine, sugar, processed foods, alcohol etc.
There is evidence that certain supplements can help with particular symptoms e.g. magnesium to address sleep issues, D ribose for increased energy etc. It is also important to address any issues that arise from blood tests e.g. low vitamin D, low B12, low iron etc.
My message is to adopt a common sense approach to nutrition, supplements and medication. None of these are the secret to recovery, but they are helpful as part of a wider, holistic strategy. Our incredible brains and bodies are always working to protect and help us heal. We just need to support them.
Find joy wherever you can.
Until next time!
