Week 4 - 04/6/2025 (Post 7)

"Life is what our thoughts make it."

Despite some very outdated thinking and what some in the medical profession might still believe, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long Covid, Fibromyalgia, FND etc are serious physical illnesses. The body and brain for all intents and purposes have been assaulted! Pressure on the system over time has led to a maladaptive stress response and a fearful brain that is on high alert.

However, despite being a physical illness there is no doubt (and current research supports this view) that what we think about and how we react to the symptoms experienced, will have a direct impact on the rate in which we recover. The mind and body can't be separated. In many respects they are one entity, working together to above all else, protect us. Just consider a time when you experienced this e.g. a knot in your stomach when you were anxious about a situation, a dry mouth when you were about to give a speech, or a headache that was brought on by overthinking.

So, what is my point?

My point is that this is not simply about thinking yourself happy. In order to recover from these illnesses we need to teach our brains that we are safe. This could include how you respond to symptoms and stressors, address traits that have not served you well or rewiring your 'plastic' brain to bring your system back to homeostatis.

Until next time, take care.
