"Weekly Wins"
An important part of recovering is making small, incremental improvements over many weeks and months. Knowing that you are able to make progress, understanding why you are making progress and measuring progress over time is crucial. It stands to reason and logical that if you are able to make some progress, then you are able to make a lot of progress. If you can make a lot of progress, then you can fully recover. Nothing else makes any sense. There will be times when you stretch your baseline and experience a setback, but the general trend over time needs to be upwards.
Early on in my recovery journey I decided that I wanted to 'celebrate the wins' in order motivate myself. Every Sunday evening I would write on a piece of paper (and on a computer when I was well enough) my 'Wins for the week'. This was not about recording major shifts, or successes (although sometimes that did happen), just anything that made me feel that recovery was possible. I split it into physical, emotional and cognitive shifts. Some examples were;
Physical - to have a shower for 5 minutes, independently, with a stool to support me, increased my walking from 0.3 of a mile to 0.4, vacuumed the living room etc.
Emotional - I responded well when receiving some bad family news, I spent longer on the phone with a friend that was struggling, I felt more hope than I have in a long time, I didn't panic when my symptoms went up a lot etc
Cognitive - I increased my reading from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, I watched a film all the way through without any increase in sensory issues, I had a friend over for coffee and I did not experience an increase in fatigue the next day etc.
It is so special when you look back over a period of time and realise how far you have come. Remember, that this is a marathon and not a sprint!.
Every day is a new life, to a wise person!
Keep believing.
Until next time.
Stuart.
